RI Vehicle Safety Inspector Certification Training & Testing
A person may be appointed as a Rhode Island Certified Motor Vehicle Inspector if they are at least eighteen (18) years of age, hold a valid driver’s license, and have successfully completed the training course in vehicle safety inspection that has been approved by the Division of Motor Vehicles.
It is expected that you have made yourself familiar with the R.I. Inspection Manual. The inspection manual can be found HERE. It is the inspector’s responsibility to be knowledgeable and familiar with the regulations pertaining to the type of vehicle he or she is inspecting.
The certified inspector must be able to demonstrate to the authorities that they are capable of properly inspecting vehicles.
After successful completion of the safety inspector's training, testing, and certification, an inspector may then enroll in an additional training class conducted by the Rhode Island Emission and Safety Inspection Program Management Company. Only upon successful completion of this additional training shall an inspector be certified to conduct safety AND emissions inspections.
Training and testing sessions are conducted monthly by DMV at the CCRI Warwick campus. Please click HERE to register for the next training and testing session.
