Chauffeur

Chauffeur License

A license issued to drive for compensation a limousine, taxi, or small van carrying under 14 passengers. The operator's license will show an "R" endorsement which signifies Chauffeurs.

Chauffeur License transactions are only processed at the Cranston DMV Headquarters location.

 

Chauffeur License Requirements

Applicant must be at least 21 years old with a minimum of 1 year of driving experience and have distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without corrective lenses. 

The following documents are required:

  • A completed Chauffeur application that must include 3 references along with their signatures
  • A current Driver's License
  • An original BCI report from the Rhode Island Attorney General's Office

  • Applicants who are not Rhode Island residents or have been licensed in another state within the past five years must also provide and obtain the following:
  1. Provide proof of a valid chauffeur’s license in his/her home state (RIGL 31-10-2)
  2. A certified driving record from the state in which they were formerly licensed
  3. A BCI from the state in which they were formerly licensed
