COMMERCIAL SKILLS TEST
You must pass all 3 parts of the Skills Test: Vehicle Inspection Test (VI), Basic Control Skills Test (BCS), and Road Test (RT).

Study sections 11, 12, and 13 of the Commercial Driver License Manual – Modernized Version

Those testing for Air Brakes must study section 5

For a School Bus (S) endorsement you must study Section 10 of the manual. You will also be required to know all procedures in the School Bus Safety Course from CCRI
Once you have passed the skills test you need to return to the Cranston DMV CDL Office to apply for your CDL.

Scheduling Your Test

All CDL Skills Tests are performed at 400 Romano Vineyard Way, North Kingstown, RI by appointment only.

The following CDL Skills tests are available to book online only:

Full Test (VI, BCS, RT) includes all sections; Visual Inspection, Basic Skills, and Road Test. This is for applicants testing for the first time or who have previously failed the Visual Inspection.

Modified Test (BCS, RT) includes only Basic Skills and Road Test. Choose this if you have previously passed the Visual Inspection or require a State Retest for School Bus.

Road Test (RT) includes only Road Test. You must have previously passed the Visual Inspection and Basic Skills to choose this reservation.

You may only have one appointment booked at a time. Skills tests must be completed before rebooking.

You must book the correct test type. If the wrong test is booked you will not be allowed to test.

Skills test fees are non-refundable.

Applicant Requirements

A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) must be held for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.

Hard copies of your CLP and operator license must be presented at testing, no paper copies allowed.

Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) must be completed prior to testing. Check your record on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry website at https://tpr.fmcsa.dot.gov/Check.
Vehicle Requirements

Valid vehicle registration and trailer registration (if applicable) must be present

Vehicle must have an active inspection sticker

Proof of active insurance must be provided

You must arrive to the test site in an empty vehicle (no loaded vehicles)

If you arrive with a loaded vehicle, you will not be tested and you will forfeit the examination fee.

All tank vehicles must arrive empty to the skills test site

hazardous tanker vehicles must be empty, cleaned, purged and accompanied by a certificate

Cancelling/Re-Scheduling
A skills test must be canceled/rescheduled at least 48 hours before the scheduled test to avoid paying another skills test fee. Reschedule an appointment online or call the Skills Test Site Office at (401) 667-2882 for assistance. Skills Test fees are non-refundable. When calling to reschedule, keep in mind that our office hours are 8:30am – 4:00pm and are not open on weekends or holidays.
