Trailer Registration
Trailers with a GVWR of 3,001 lbs or more require a title. A vehicle identification check (VIN) is required if the trailer is currently titled out of state and weighs 3,001 lbs. or more. A safety inspection is required for all trailers 1,000 lbs & greater. List of RI Inspection Stations.
Purchased Trailer
- Bill of sale
- Title is required for a trailer with a GVWR of 3,001 & greater or if the trailer is from a non-titled state proof of the previous ownership (e.g. old registration or paid sales tax form in the name of the seller) is required.
- Application for Registration
- Use Tax form
- Proof of insurance. The insurance information is for the vehicle pulling the trailer.
- Costs are listed in the DMV Registration Fee Table
- If purchased at a RI dealership, tax will be collected at the time of sale, tax exempt form and proof of tax paid will be required
- Information regarding the length of the trailer and carrying capacity is required at the time of registration.
Homemade Trailer
- Application for Registration
- Affidavit for Homemade Trailer
- Sales or Use Tax Exemption Certificate form

- Homemade trailers are never titled
